Arrested with $153,000: Police snag man carrying $153,000 in a suitcase

A man who was arrested with $153,000 in cash before boarding a private plane is now facing money laundering charges. Police say they were notified after 33-year-old Conor Guckian paid $20,000 in cash for a chartered private plane from Tenn. to Calif, a Jan. 14 report from Reuters explained. An employee became suspicious of Guckian due to him paying for the private jet with the large sum of cash. Shortly after officials confronted Guckian, he was searched and arrested with the $153,000 after a K-9 unit alerted officers of the scent of narcotics coming from his suitcase.

When police questioned Guckian about why he was traveling with $153,000, which was found in his luggage in 32 bundles, he explained to them that he thought it would be safer to transport the cash via private plane instead of a commercial airliner. Upon further questioning, Guckian explained to police that the reason for him being at Nashville was to visit a friend. However, he later admitted that he was there because the flights were cheaper.

The affidavit regarding the case involving the man arrested with $153,000 stated that "the manner in which the U.S. currency was wrapped is consistent with that of drug proceeds."

Guckian admitted to authorities that the $153,000 was indeed his and he confessed that he made sure that money in his bank accounts never reached $10,000 in order to prevent an investigation from the IRS.

He also revealed to police that he was planning on using the $153,000 to purchase gold, says the affidavit.

As of the time of this report, Guckian remains in jail in lieu of $10,000 bond.

More details involving the man arrested with $153,000 are still forthcoming, and updates will be posted here as they are made available.

The story of a man arrested with $153,000 comes just a month after authorities arrested a 58-year-old man who allegedly planned to commit a suicide bombing at an airport in Kansas.

Terry L. Loewen, an avionics technician who worked at Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, was arrested and charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction, attempting to damage property with an explosive and attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization.
