(Updated) Nine-year-old Reann Murphy was last seen alive playing outside her Smithville, Ohio family home around 5:30 p.m. on Dec. 13. Reann was reported missing immediately afterwards.

A frantic search of the mobile park where she lived ensued, according to ABC News.

Those helping to try to find the missing child included deputies from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, local firefighters, neighbors, and other police. The desperate search went on into a long, cold, dark night.

At approximately 1:35 a.m. on Sunday, police found the body of a small child in a trash dumpster near Murphy’s home.

Reann Murphy’s death was ruled a homicide. The violent nature of her death motivated the police to vehemently pursue those responsible for the little girl’s murder.

By Sunday, officials from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation were on site assisting Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputies with their investigation.

Sheriff Travis Hutchinson said that “Any violent death is troubling but the death of a child is much more so. We will leave no stone unturned …”

At approximately 1:40 p.m. today, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department announced that an arrest was made in connection with Reann’s murder.

Mercury News reported that 24-year-old Jerrod Metsker, a neighbor of Reann’s, was arrested on Sunday and charged with the little girl’s murder.

Wayne County Sheriff Travis Hutchinson said at a news conference today that Metsker, in addition to being a neighbor, was also considered to be a family friend. Hutchinson did not go into detail about the specifics regarding the manner of Reann’s death, nor did he provide a motive for her murder.

A shaken neighbor of Reann’s, Marilyn Briggs, who lives next to the mobile park said that the area is generally pretty safe with no history of serious crimes.

"It sickens me and I'm so sad for the family, and this close to Christmas,” Briggs said.

"It's just awful. You never think something like that is going to happen in your area." ~ The Herald Sun
