Here are the atheist links that have caught my eye lately.
--I was looking at Raina's site (add more content Raina) and I completely missed this: an interview with a guy called Gary C. Booker who created something called the African Space Science Institute. Here's the radio interview and this is a link to the site about the initiative.
-- Creationists around the country have created an alternate universe where Intelligent Design beats out evolutionary theory. Here's a bit:
Not only does replacing science with biblical literalism violate the separation of church and state, it leaves young people massively ill-prepared for higher education. Public universities teach evolution without qualification or apology. A poor understanding of what is considered to be the central organizing principle of science handicaps students from the first day they walk into freshman Biology 101.
In fact, a failure to understand evolution can make it harder for high school students to get into the best colleges. Try passing the Advanced Placement Biology exam when you know nothing of natural selection. A poor grounding in evolution can choke off entire career paths for young people.
Read the whole terrifying thing here. It's not just Texas, either. We're really losing the war for Reason in the United States. That's not a good war to lose. The writer details disturbing incidents in Louisiana, Georgia, Ohio and even my home state of Pennsylvania.
--One of the cool things about the above horrible story is that there are people who are fighting this and one of those persons is a kid. His name is Zack Kopplin. Here's his Wikipedia profile. He's also had a number of memorable youtube and television appearances. Try here and here and here. There is hope for the youth.
--Speaking of Youtube videos, there are a whole slew of videos from the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF). You can check out those videos here. There's even a video about some Atheist efforts here in Pennsylvania. Apparently, if you put up your Atheist banner you're not a team player somehow.
