Around Campus: Volleyball wins opening tournament

Around Campus is a weekly feature keeping you current in the world of RedHawks sports.

Volleyball: The season got off to a perfect start for Miami, as the RedHawks (4-0) won the season-opening Quality Inn/ASICS Classic Tournament in Terre Haute, Indiana over the weekend. It started with a 3-0 win over Coppin State (1-3) in the opening round and a 3-1 triumph over Eastern Illinois (2-2) on Friday. Then on Saturday, the 'Hawks edged Indiana State (3-1) 3 games to 2 before sweeping Chicago State (0-4) 3-0 to claim the tournament title. Madison Hardy was named the Tournament MVP, while Cassie Farrell and Jenn Caylor were also named to the All-Tournament Team with her. This coming weekend the 'Hawks will face #1 Penn State (1-1), New Hampshire (0-4) and Pittsburgh (4-0) at the University of Pittsburgh Invitational.

Soccer: The RedHawks (2-2) started the season strong with a pair of 4-0 wins at home on opening weekend, but then followed those with two 2-1 losses on the road this weekend to drop back to .500. Katy Dolesh was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week following opening weekend, as she scored three goals and an assist in the two wins. Currently, Jess Kodiak is on a three-game goal streak, as the team comes back home to host ETSU (0-2), Wright State (3-0) and Tennessee-Martin (2-1) in the Miami Tournament next weekend.

Field Hockey: The RedHawks (0-2) dropped their first two games of the season, falling 3-0 at Indiana on Friday and 4-0 to Northwestern in the home opener on Sunday. The 'Hawks will look for their first win of the year when they head to New Jersey this weekend, facing Monmouth (0-1) on Friday and Rutgers (1-0) on Sunday.

CCHA: No doubt you know by now that the 2011-2012 season will be the second-to-last for the RedHawks in the CCHA, as earlier this summer it was announced that Miami will form a brand new hockey conference along with five current members of the WCHA starting in 2013. That's just been part of what has been an incredibly tumultuous off-season in college hockey. Here is USCHO's breakdown of exactly what D-I hockey will look like (tentatively) come 2013. Once we get closer to the puck dropping on this season and some more loose ends have been tied up, look for a detailed explanation of everything that happened this summer here in this space.
