Around Campus is a weekly feature keeping you current with what's news in the RedHawks' roost.

Volleyball: The RedHawks (8-2) had a great weekend, winning their second tournament of the season in claiming the Miami Best Western/Sycamore Inn Invitational for the first time ever. Miami came from behind to beat Florida Gulf Coast 3-2 (26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 16-14) on Friday, before downing Radford 3-1 (25-22, 25-14, 19-25, 25-17) on Saturday. That set the 'Hawks up for a match with Alabama A&M on Saturday, which they won in straight sets (25-20, 25-20, 25-17) to claim the title. With 27 kills and 7 block assists to her credit over the weekend, Amy Raseman was named the Tournament MVP, while Cassie Farrell, Jenn Caylor and Meg Riley were also named to the All-Tournament Team. Then on Monday, Madison Hardy was rewarded for her weekend performance (34 digs in just two games played) by being named the MAC East Division Defensive Player of the Week. Miami has a quick turnaround, as the 'Hawks will be playing at Wright State (1-8) on Tuesday. Then they will travel to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to partake in the Tar Heel Classic over the weekend against St. Louis (3-4), North Carolina (6-2) and Tulsa (6-4).

Men's Cross Country: Jarrod Eick was the top finisher for the second consecutive event, leading Miami to a team victory at the Miami Open. His time of 25:39 was closely followed by teammates Dave Wing and Daniel Garleb, giving Miami the top three finishers. Miami's team score was 25.The 'Hawks will now enjoy a two-week layoff before traveling to Baton, Rouge, Louisiana for the LSU Invitational September 24.

Women's Cross Country: The Lady 'Hawks were even more dominant, claiming the top three finishes plus #5 to win the Miami Open with a team score of 19. Kelley Miller was the event's winner with a time of 18:11, with Maggie Bingham (2nd), Kate Carter (3rd) and Jillian Dickman (5th) coming in shortly behind her. The 'Hawks will travel up to East Lansing, Michigan for the Spartan Invitational this coming Friday.

Soccer: Miami hosted the RedHawk Shootout Tournament, but ended up having a rather light week, as weather shortened the schedule for the 'Hawks (3-2). After falling behind early Friday, Kayla Zakrzewski scored just before halftime (her third of the season) to tie the score at 1-1, and then Courtney Clarke got her first goal of the year with less than four minutes remaining in regulation to steal a 2-1 win over Tennessee-Martin. Lightning and heavy rain forced Sunday's game against East Tennessee State to be cancelled though, and the contest will not be made up. Instead, the 'Hawks will look ahead and prepare for Friday's road game against Evansville (1-5-3) and then a home contest against Indiana State (3-4) on Sunday.

Field Hockey: Facing stiff competition, the Redhawks (1-5) dropped a pair of 2-1 decisions. They fell to #7 Virginia on Friday and then to Michigan State on Sunday. The 'Hawks will remain in Oxford this weekend as they welcome William & Mary (3-1) and UC Davis (2-2) to campus.

Golf: The RedHawks opened their season at the Northern Intercollegiate with a 13th-place finish. The team shot a combined 81-over in the 16-team competition. Brett Tomfohrde was Miami's top finisher, shooting 21-over, good for 56th place. The next scheduled outing for the 'Hawks will be the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic, September 26-27 in South Bend, Indiana.

Softball: The RedHawks will be starting their exhibition season this coming Saturday with a trio of scrimmages against Northern Kentucky, Morehead State and Findlay.
