Softball: The softball season opened at the Central Florida Tournament, where Miami (3-2) won three of its five games. In their season-opening doubleheader, they downed Delaware 10-1 in a five-inning game before falling 3-2 to Notre Dame. Jessica Simpson allowed one run in four innings for the victory, while six different RedHawks drove in runs against Delaware. She toed the rubber again that day against the Irish, pitching the full seven innings while allowing just three runs, but the offense was spent from the first game.
The team won both of its Saturday games, beating UIC 1-0 and UCF 6-5, For the third time in as many games, it was Simpson on the mound for Miami and she put together a masterful performance. She earned the complete game shutout while striking out 14 and only allowing five hits. In the second game, shortstop Kayla Ledbetter had a three-hit performance to pace the 'Hawks while Simpson came on in relief to earn her first save of the season.
In the tournament championship game, the 'Hawks were victimized by the Fighting Irish for a second time, falling 4-1. Simpson pitched the complete game again, with her record dropping to 2-2. Center fielder Jordan McElroy drove in Miami's lone run with a fifth-inning single.
The 'Hawks will move from one tournament to the next, as this weekend they will play in the Louisville Tournament. They will face Wright State (4-0), Boston University (0-0), Southern-Illinois Edwardsville (3-6) and Louisville (4-5).
Women's Track & Field: The RedHawks won six events en route to finishing in second place at the Ball State Quadrangular. Hope Alexander won the triple jump with a jump of 38-0.25/11.59m. Samantha Gable won the weight toss with a 53-11/16.43m. Alexandra Roberts then was the winner in shot put, with a throw of 46-8.75/14.24m. Miami's final winner in the field events was Kori Tatman in the high jump with a 11-3/3.43m. In the track events, Rachel Patterson won the mile run in 4:58.79. Also Diona Graves won the 60m run in 7.67 seconds. This weekend the team will compete in the MAC Championships in Bowling Green.
Men's Track & Field: The men's squad finished in second as well at the Rick Meindl Last Call, their final indoor meet of the season. Jarrod Eick won the 1000m run in 2:31.88. Matt Marol won the 3000m in 8:49.40. Also Justinn Eddie won the 60m in 7.07 seconds. The team will now have a few weeks off before competing in the Vanderbilt Black & Gold March 25 & 26 in Nashville.
Tennis: The 'Hawks (5-3) dropped their only match of the week 4-3 to Kentucky (1-6). Miami swept the doubles competition 3-0, but fell in four of six singles matches. This weekend the team heads to Louisville to play Austin Peay and North Texas.
Women's Basketball: The lady's b-ball team (10-16, 2-11) saw their struggles continue, as their losing streak reached nine consecutive games with losses at home to Kent State (18-7, 9-4) and Bowling Green (22-4, 10-3). In Thursday's 72-64 loss to the Golden Flashes, Courtney Osborn led all scorers with 28 points, but it wasn't quite enough to dig the 'Hawks out of a 16-point hole. Then in a 73-61 loss to the Falcons on Saturday, had three players score in double digits. This week the 'Hawks will go on the road to play Buffalo (13-13, 6-7) on Wednesday before hosting Akron (13-12, 6-7) in their last home game of the season on Saturday.
Women's Swimming: The women's swimming team will compete in the MAC Championships Wednesday through Saturday in Athens, Ohio.
Golf: The golf team emerged from a winter hibernation to compete in its first match since October. The Rice Intercollegiate began on Monday in Houston, Texas and will conclude Tuesday. After the first day of competition, the 'Hawks were in 13th place in the 15-team field, shooting a collective 596 for 20-over par.
