Men's Basketball: Julian Mavunga was named Co-MAC East Division Player of the Week after leading the 'Hawks to a pair of victories this past week. He scored 17 points in Tuesday's 76-57 win over Saginaw Valley State. He was 7-of-8 from the field, and added six rebounds, two assists, three blocks and a steal. He was key for Miami's 80-73 come-from-behind win over Troy on Saturday, He had 16 points, including a 7-for-10 night at the charity stripe. He added nine rebounds, three assists and a block. This is the second time he was won the award in his career, and is the first RedHawk to win it this year. He shared the award this week with Buffalo's Byron Mulkey. Next up for Miami will be a Saturday game at Wright State (5-5, 0-1 Horizon League).
Women's Basketball: Courtney Osborn was named MAC East Division Player of the Week for the Lady 'Hawks as well. She was on fire in all three of Miami's victories, scoring a combined 75 points. She put up 26 against both Marshall and Indiana, and 23 against Cal State-Bakersfield. It is the second time she has won the award in her career, and she is the second 'Hawk to win it this year after Maggie Boyer won it four weeks ago.
With the win's the Lady 'Hawks have stretched their win streak to five straight, improving their record to 6-3. The Indiana game started as a defensive struggle, with Miami leading by just 25-21 at the half. Though the second half turned into a heated scoring match, the 'Hawks got the better of the Hoosiers, outshooting them 42% to 33% in the half. After Osborn, Boyer was the only other 'Hawk in double digit scoring, with 14 points. The floodgates really opened on Saturday against Cal, with four RedHawks hitting double figures. Osborn's 23 were second-most on the team, behind Boyer's game-high 34. Kirsten Olowinski had a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds, while Rachael Hencke added 10 points and Lillian Pitts grabbed 11 rebounds. Both teams seemingly could not miss from three-point range, with the 'Hawks hitting 10-of-19 long-range shots, to the Roadrunners' 14-of-23. The 'Hawks will next play at Northeastern (4-4) on Saturday.
Swimming: James Beres and Leah Thornton were both named MAC Player of the Week. Beres set new MAC, Miami and pool records at the Miami Invitational, in the one-meter board with a score of 388.30. He also won the three-meter board with a score of 423.25, setting new MAC, pool and Miami Invitational records. Both scores qualify him for the NCAA Zone Championships at the end of the season. Thompson led the women's team to the Miami Invitational title with three individual and two relay wins. She won the 100-yard backstroke 54.94) 200-yard backstroke (1:57.83), and 200-yard butterfly (2:01.24). All three times are new school records, and her time in the 200-yard backstroke is a new meet record. Also she swam first on the 200- (1:42.21) and 400-yard (3:45.00) medley relay teams. She recorded personal best times in the 100-yard butterfly (55.57) and 100-yard freestyle (52.22).
Ice Hockey: The Miami Hockey Brotherhood enjoyed their first bye week of the season but did get some good news, as the national rankings were updated anyway. The 'Hawks remained ranked No. 6 in the USCHO.com poll, and moved back up two spots to reclaim that same rank in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. They remained at No. 10 in the INCH Power Rankings. Yale remains the top-ranked team in both polls. However with their week of inactivity, the 'Hawks slipped out of first place in the CCHA standings. They now sit in third place with 27 points, third behind Michigan's 28 and Notre Dame's 29. The 'Hawks remain on bye until the Florida College Classic December 29th & 30th. Since most teams around the country will be on break as well, the rankings will not update again until January.
