Around Campus: Patterson and Paterra advance to NCAA Championships

Around Campus is a weekly feature keeping you current in the RedHawks' roost.

Women's Track & Field: Rachel Patterson and Tori Paterra became the first RedHawks to advance to the NCAA Championships since 2008 as they finished in the top 12 in their events at the East Regional competition held in Bloomington, Indiana. Patterson ran the 5000m in 16:16.95, good for seventh place. Paterra threw a 47.36m/155-4 in the javelin, also good for seventh place. She will compete June 9 in Des Moines, Iowa, while Patterson will run the next day. Alexandra Roberts, Samantha Gable and Katie Lenahan also competed at the Regionals, but fell short of advancing. Roberts finished in 34th in the shot put (14.62m/47-11.75), but fouled out in the discus competition. Lenahan was 47th in the 800m run (2:18.09), while Gable was 42nd in the hammer throw (50.99m/167-03).

Men's Track & Field: Four of Miami's men competed at the NCAA Regionals, but were unable to advance. Matt Rudin finished in 28th place in the pole vault with a vault of 4.90m/16-0.75. Nathan Hoch and Rob Stein both competed in the discus, finishing in 37th (48.13m/157-11) and 44th place (42.17m/138-4), respectively. Adam Ruiz fouled out in the shot put. A top 12 finish was necessary to advance for all events, meaning the men's team has finished its season.

Swimming: Head women's swimming coach Dave Jennings announced the signing of 11 new recruits to Miami's incoming class of freshmen: Katie Bootsma (Eden Prairie H.S., Eden Prairie, MN); Kaitlyn Click (Ursaline Academy, Batavia, OH); Courtney Collett (Heritage Academy, Hilton Head Island, SC); Emma Craig (Mercy H.S., Ann Arbor, MI); Caitlyn Fujan (Byron H.S., Byron MN); Annie Marquiss (Solon H.S., Solon, OH); Whitney Mitchell (Libertyville H.S., Green Oaks, IL); Stephanie Pearce (Turpin H.S., Cincinnati, OH); Gabbie Pettinichi (Turpin, H.S., Cincinnati, OH); Lauren Sichterman (Wausau H.S., South Lebanon, OH); and Amy Trace (Upper Arlington H.S., Upper Arlington, OH).

Players of the Week: With the conclusion of the Spring sports season, we can tally up the number of times RedHawks athletes were named MAC/CCHA Player of the Week. According the university's official count, Miami totaled 66 nominations this season, second most amongst MAC schools, behind Kent State's 71. However, one must note that most of Miami's POTW winners came from the hockey team (10), and Miami is one of only three MAC schools that has sports a CCHA hockey team. Still, it's a pretty high mark. There was nearly an even split between the men and women. The men claimed 32 awards, while the ladies edged them out with 34. Jessica Simpson was named MAC East Division Pitcher of the week seven times, a new MAC record. Also, Miami boasted 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Week winners this school year, seven for the men and five for the women. That was tied with Buffalo for the most in the MAC.

NCAA APR results: Last week we reported that Miami's golf, softball and men's cross country teams had received perfect scores from the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate report, a survey that examines the academic performance of collegiate sports teams, determining whether or not they are meeting established standards. The full report has since been released, revealing the scores of all the other RedHawks sports teams. With a perfect score being 1,000 points the RedHawks scored as follows: volleyball (995); field hockey (993); women's swimming (989); men's track & field (985); tennis (984); men's basketball (976); men's swimming (971); football (970); women's track & field (970); baseball (967); and women's basketball (960). Ice hockey and synchronized skating are not included in the survey. Because all programs are well-above the NCAA's cut-off score of 925, none of the teams will face any penalties and the world can continue to turn.

Professional Hockey Playoffs: Dan Boyle's ('94-'98) San Jose Sharks were ousted in the NHL's Western Conference Finals 4 games to 1 by the Vancouver Canucks, who get to play the Boston Bruins for the Stanley Cup. Boyle, a former RedHawk defenseman, scored five points in the series (2 goals, 3 assists), and 16 points overall (4 goals, 12 assists) during San Jose's postseason run. While his quest for a second Stanley Cup championship has come up short, another Miami hockey alum is still active in his league's final playoff: Jarod Palmer ('06-'10) and the Houston Aeros are now tied with the Binghamton Senators 1-1 in the Calder Cup Finals, the final round of the AHL Playoffs. Palmer is in his first year with the Aeros, the AHL affiliate of the NHL's Minnesota Wild. He has recorded five points (3 goals, 2 assists) through 20 playoff games so far.
