Women's Basketball: The Lady 'Hawks basketball team split their two games this week, but Courtney Osborn was named the MAC East Division Player of the Week for the second time this year. It's the third time in her career she's won the award. In a 94-84 loss to Chicago State (6-7) Thursday, she scored 29 points. Maggie Boyer scored 16 points in the game, and Kirsten Olowinksi added 10 more for the 'Hawks in a game that neither team was able to run away with. On Sunday the 'Hawks won their non-conference finale against local rival Cincinnati (7-6) 65-56. Osborn scored 12 points, adding 8 assists. The leading scorer for Miami was Boyer with 18, while Olowinski added 11 more and 16 rebounds for a double-double. The 'Hawks begin the important part of their schedule now with MAC play beginning. They will next play on the road against Kent State (9-3) on Wednesday.
Ice Hockey: Cameron Schilling was named CCHA Defenseman of the Week. He scored a goal and added an assist in the College Hockey Classic last week, helping the 'Hawks finish second in the tournament. He tallied a +4 rating for the tournament, helping the 'Hawks kill 10 of 13 power plays they faced. He is the fifth RedHawk to win a Player of the Week award from the CCHA this year, though the previous four were all offensive players. It the first such award of his career.
In other hockey news, the 'Hawks slipped in both national polls, the first of 2011. In the last rankings, Miami was #6 in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Polls. However, after finishing as the runner-up to St. Cloud State at the College Hockey Classic, the Brotherhood fell to #7 in the in the USCHO.com poll, and #8 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. The top six spots in both polls are identical: #1 Yale, #2 North Dakota, #3 Boston College, #4 New Hampshire, #5 Minnesota-Duluth, #6 Denver. Michigan sits ahead of Miami at #7 in the USA Today poll. In the INCH Power Rankings, the 'Hawks climbed back up one spot to #9. The 'Hawks remain in third place in the CCHA standings, one point behind Michigan and two behind Notre Dame, as all three teams faced non-conference opponents.
