Women's Basketball: The Lady RedHawks (10-7, 2-2) got back on track with a pair of victories in MAC play. In the third annual "Class at the Court" game, the 'Hawks used fiery three-point shooting to defeat the Buffalo Bulls 94-89 Wednesday in Oxford. Miami shot 71.4% (10-of-14) from beyond the arc in the first half, and 52% overall. Four RedHawks scored in double digits, including three over 20 points. Courtney Osborn was the leading scorer with 24 points, and Kirsten Olowinski added 22 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Maggie Boyer also scored 22 for the 'Hawks. Olowinski then set a new career high with 27 points and 12 rebounds for double-double #7 in Miami's 68-63 win over Akron on the road Saturday. Osborn and Lillian Pitts added 17 and 10 points respectively for Miami. The RedHawks fell behind by 8 early on, and went into halftime down 33-28 despite coming back to regain the lead at one point. But the 'Hawks came on strong after the intermission and did not trail again after reclaiming the lead 35-33 less than two minutes into the second half. The lead was pushed to as much as 13, but the Zips rallied to make the score close down the stretch. Next up for Miami this week will be a home game against Ohio (4-13, 0-4) Tuesday and a road matchup at Northern Illinois (6-10, 0-4) Sunday.
Soccer: Brooke Livingston and Julie Thompson were named to the First-Team All-Ohio Team while Kayla Zakrzewski was named to the Second-Team. This marks the third time in four years Miami has had three players named to the squad. The RedHawks finished first in the MAC East Division this year (13-7-2, 5-4-2) before falling to eventual tournament champion Central Michigan 2-1 in the MAC Conference Semi-Finals.
Women's Track & Field: After more than a month off from events, the RedHawks competed in their second event of the season, finishing in fourth place at the BGSU Challenge in a seven-team field. The team's 112 points weren't enough to catch Western Michigan's 168, who won the event by 20 points. Dayton and host Bowling Green were the other teams to finish ahead of the 'Hawks. Miami did have three individual winners though: Hope Alexander won the triple jump with a leap of 11.28m/37-0.25. Jillian Dickman won the mile run with a personal-best 5:03.66. Katie Scannell won the 500m in 1:16.09. The team's next meet will be the All-Ohio Championships, hosted at Kent State January 21-22.
Ice Hockey: Reilly Smith was named the CCHA Offensive Player of the Week. He won the award earlier this year in the first week of November. He is the fifth RedHawk to be named Offensive Player of the Week this season (Cameron Schilling also earned a Defenseman of the Week award this season.) This week he helped the 'Hawks to a sweep of Bowling Green, scoring three goals and adding an assist. His 16 goals this year are best in the CCHA and fifth in the nation, while his 31 points rank fourth in the CCHA and ninth in the country.
In rankings news, the 'Hawks moved up one spot in the USCHO.com poll to #11, but remained at #12 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. Miami also moved two spots back up to #12 in the INCH Power Rankings. The top of the national polls have not changed much in recent weeks, with Yale hardly loosening their stranglehold on the #1 ranking in both polls. Behind them, the polls are identical all the way down through #9: North Dakota, Boston College, Denver, Minnesota-Duluth, Michigan, New Hampshire, Notre Dame, Wisconsin. Union College holds the #10 ranking in the USA Today poll, while Maine has the spot in the USCHO.com poll. In the CCHA standings, Miami moved back into third place, as Ferris State was swept by second-place Michigan. The Wolverines are one point behind leader Notre Dame, and four points ahead of Miami. The 'Hawks will play Michigan State this weekend before playing Notre Dame in a crucial matchup the week after.
Swimming: The women's swimming and diving team (7-1, 2-0) picked up a pair of dual meet victories, downing Evansville 193.5-104.5 Wednesday, then notched their seventh straight win Friday against Cincinnati 175.5-124.5. They next swim against Ball State on Saturday. The men's team (3-4-1, 1-1) put up the same results, by scores of 170-110 and 165-113 respectively. On Saturday they will be swimming against Eastern Michigan.
Synchronized Skating: The collegiate team took home the gold at the Mid-America Skating Championships while the senior team finished in second place by a mere 2 points. The collegiate team will next skate at the Midwestern Championships February 5-6 while the senior team will go to Milan, Italy for the Spring Cup February 11-13.
