Around Campus is a weekly feature keeping you current around the rest of the RedHawks' roost.
Swimming: The men's team (2-1) picked up a win at home over Xavier by a 156-106 margin with Dan Nemeth and Chris Gunnels each winning two individuals and a relay race to lead the RedHawks. Nemeth won the 50 (21.26s) and 100 (47.07s) freestyles while Gunnels won the 100 (52.42s) and 200 (1:53.96m) backstrokes. Both men swam on the 200 freestyle relay, turning in a time of 1:24.79m. Six other swimmers also recorded event wins for Miami.
The women's team (1-1) opened up its season with a 175-117 loss to Purdue before beating Xavier 169-85, giving Miami a sweep over the Musketeers. Nikki Craft was Miami's only event winner against Purdue, taking the one-meter dive with a score of 253.20. In the Xavier meet Chelsey Bruington, Bekka Westrick, Maegan O'Connor and Michaela Scott each won two events for Miami. Bruington won the 50 (24.39s) and 500 (5:09.08m) freestyles while Scott won the 100 (1:06.25m) and 200 (2:24.50m) breaststrokes. Westrick won the 200 freestyle (1:54.01m), O'Connor was the winner in the 100 backstroke (58.54s) and then both ladies were on the victorious 400 medley relay team (3:52.65). Four other 'Hawks also claimed single victories at the meet, including the first collegiate wins by three freshmen.
The men's and women's teams combined to win 21 of 28 events against Xavier.
The Miami men will head to Purdue to swim against the Boilermakers on Friday while the women go up against Akron Saturday on the road in a MAC meet.
Soccer: The RedHawks (9-8, 4-6) extended their winning streak to three games with a 3-0 victory over Northern Illinois on Friday but then fell 2-0 to Western Michigan on Sunday. Jess Kodiak scored the first two goals of the match, in the sixth and 51st minutes, and Katy Dolesh added her seventh of the season in the 53rd minute. Allison Norenberg stopped all four shots that were put on goal in the win (her fourth shutout of the season), and two more in the loss to the Broncos. Miami did outshoot Western Michigan 23-11 in defeat.
For the second time in her career, Kodiak was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week for her contributions, the second consecutive week a Miami player has claimed the honor (Dolesh earned it last week). Her nine goals and 22 points lead the league as we enter the final week of play. The 'Hawks will host Bowling Green (6-13, 3-7) on Thursday needing a victory to clinch the #8 seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament.
Ice Hockey: Following this weekend's series sweep at the hands of Ferris State, the RedHawks (2-4-0, 0-2-0) continue to plummet in the national polls. Miami slipped from #10 into a tie with Colgate at #16 in the USCHO.com Poll. Miami's fall in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll was even more dramatic, as the 'Hawks fell out of the rankings entirely, dropping from #7. The 'Hawks did receive 40 points, just three away from #15 Minnesota-Duluth.
Both polls sport an identical top five: #1 Boston College, #2 Denver, #3 Colorado College, #4 Michigan and #5 Notre Dame. Ferris State rocketed up the polls to #6/7, even garnering one first-place vote in the USCHO.com poll. Western Michigan ranks at #7/10, while Northern Michigan sits at #14 in both polls. Lake Superior State earned a #18 ranking in the USCHO.com Poll.
Field Hockey: Playing three home games over the course of the week, the RedHawks (6-13, 4-5) suffered a pair of one-goal losses to Ohio State and then Ohio before gritting out a 6-5 win over Kent State. Amanda Seeley scored Miami's lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Ohio State, and also the game-winner in the victory over Kent. The Bobcats shut out Miami 1-0 in between those two games. Miami will play its regular season finale Saturday at Missouri State (5-11, 1-7), and will be either the #3 or #4 seed in next month's MAC Tournament.
Volleyball: A pair of road losses to conference foes stretched Miami's losing streak to six games. The RedHawks (12-12, 3-7) fell in four sets to Ball State and in five to Toledo. The 'Hawks have their work cut out for them if they are to have any shot of sneaking into the MAC Tournament next month. Only six matches remain this season, and four of them are at home. That will start with two home matches this coming weekend against Kent State (8-16, 1-9) and Ohio (15-9, 7-3).
Golf: Miami finished in 10th place out of 12 teams at the Georgetown Invitational in Beallsville, Maryland with a score of 63-over par. Ben Peacock and Brett Tomfohrde tied for the best score on the team with a 15-over par, good for 29th place. The RedHawks will participate in their final event of the fall schedule on October 30 when they travel to South Carolina for the Kiawah Island Intercollegiate.
NCAA Ice Hockey: Sad news in the changing landscape of college hockey, as the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) has announced that the current season will be the final one for the Chargers as a varsity program. Citing financial concerns, the school's interim president, Malcolm Portera, announced that at the conclusion of the season the program will be demoted back down to a club sport. UAH is in its second season as a D-I Independent program, following the closure of College Hockey America (CHA) after the 2009-2010 season. Since upgrading to varsity status in 1986, the Chargers had won two Division II National Championships and appeared in the D-I Tournament twice, most recently in 2010.
Following UAH's departure, Miami will once again be the Southernmost D-I men's ice hockey program in the nation. Miami is 6-1-0 all-time against UAH, having last faced the Chargers in that 2010 NCAA Tournament, a game the RedHawks won 2-1. The 'Hawks will be the final collegiate team to play the Chargers as a varsity program, as UAH's season finale will be a two-game series in Oxford February 10-11.
