Around Campus is a weekly feature keeping you updated on Miami's lower-profile athletics.
Golf: Freshman Austin Kelly was named the MAC co-Golfer of the Week after winning the Georgetown Intercollegiate Tournament Tuesday. It was his first career tournament victory, coming in just his sixth event. His three-round score of 66-71-68 was good for 8-under par, four strokes better than all other competitors in the 71-person field. Miami finished in second as a team, shooting 5-over par. The 'Hawks will conclude the Fall Season at the St. Mary's Collegiate Invitational in Pebble Beach, California, shooting 36 holes Monday, and the final 18 on Tuesday. The Spring season will begin February 21 with the Rice Intercollegiate in Houston, Texas.
Field Hockey: The 'Hawks field hockey team (11-6, 6-2) beat Missouri State (5-11, 2-6) 3-2 in overtime Sunday, giving them consecutive wins as they prepare for the final weekend of the regular season. The Bears scored first in this contest, but the 'Hawks' Christine Brightwell and Emily Gruesser scored seven minutes apart from each other to take the lead in the second half. After the Bears tied the game back up, the 'Hawks got a game-winner in overtime on Brightwell's second goal of the game, her seventh goal of the season. With games against Ball State (6-10, 2-6) and Central Michigan (4-12, 2-6) next weekend, the 'Hawks remain just behind Kent State (12-6, 7-2) for the top spot in the MAC. Kent plays just one more game this season, meaning two wins for Miami will give the 'Hawks at least a share of the regular season title.
Volleyball: Miami volleyball (8-15, 3-7) split their weekend matchups, falling 3-0 to Ball State (18-4, 8-2) Friday, but triumphing over Toledo (8-13, 3-7) 3-1 on Saturday. The 'Hawks remain at home next weekend, hosting Akron (13-9, 5-5) and Buffalo (14-12, 2-8).
