Around Campus: Field Hockey earns regular season title

Around Campus is a weekly feature keeping you updated on Miami's lower-profile athletics.

Field Hockey: Miami's field hockey team (13-6, 8-2) had an historic weekend, ending their regular season with a pair of shutouts. During Friday's 7-0 rout of beat Ball State (6-13, 2-8), Mary Hull became just the fourth player in program history to score 100 points in her career, as she scored two goals and had two assists. Saturday's 3-0 victory over Central Michigan (5-13, 3-7) came on Senior Day and clinched a share of the MAC title with Kent State, who finished the season with a record identical to Miami's. It is the first championship in program history. The 'Hawks were awarded the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MAC Tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker. They will have a first-round bye in the tournament, and will play the winner of Thursday's Ohio/Ball State matchup on Friday.

Men's Cross Country: The men's cross country team came up just short at the MAC Tournament, finishing in second place. David Eichenberger finished fourth overall, running a career-best 24:50.5. Michael Perry came in just behind him in sixth place, with a season-best time of 24:54.8. Both were named First Team All-MAC. The other 'Hawks to score points were Jarrod Eick (21st place), Chris Dennison (31st place), and Matt Marol (32nd place).

Women's Cross Country: The women's cross country team missed out on a chance for a third consecutive conference championship, finishing in third place at the MAC Tournament. Rachel Patterson finished third overall with a time of 20:48.4, the second best 6K time in program history. She was named First Team All-MAC for the third time in her career. Maggie Bingham finished 11th overall, running a career-best 21:20.5. She and Kelley Miller (13th place) were named Second Team All-MAC, with Bingham earning the accolade for the second time. Jillian Dickman and Amanda Mirochna also scored for Miami, finishing in 18th and 24th.

Both teams will run November 13 in the Great Lakes Regional Championship with a berth in the NCAA Tournament at stake.

Golf: Nathan Sutherland was named the MAC Golfer of the Week for the second time this year, one week after teammate Austin Kelly won the award. He was the highest finisher for Miami at the St. Mary's Invitational, finishing in a tie for fourth place. He shot a career-low 65 in the second round, and finished one over par overall, just five strokes behind the leader. As a team, Miami finished sixth in the 15-team field, shooting 26 over par. The 'Hawks are done now until the Rice Intercollegiate starts on February 21.

Volleyball: For the second week in a row, the volleyball team (9-16, 4-8) split their weekend matches against MAC rivals, beating Akron (14-10, 6-6) 3-1 on Friday, but losing to Buffalo (15-13, 3-9) 3-0 Saturday. Next up the 'Hawks will host Bowling Green (8-18, 2-10) at home on Thursday before going on the road to play Western Michigan (18-8, 8-4) on Saturday. Only one weekend remains in the regular season after that.

Swimming: The swimming and diving season is now underway. The men's team now sits at 1-1-1 following this weekend's loss to Purdue 193.5-99.5 and a 150-150 tie to Cleveland State. In the opening weekend they downed Xavier 143-114. They will host Buffalo this weekend. The women's team is 2-1 after winning their only meet of the weekend 193.5-106.5 over Buffalo, their first conference matchup of the season. Last weekend they dropped the season-opener to Purdue 190-105 but were victorious over Xavier 193-67. This weekend they host Eastern Michigan.
