Around Campus: Dolesh leads soccer team to turnaround

Around Campus is a weekly feature keeping you current on all the current events in the RedHawks' roost.

Soccer: The RedHawks (8-7, 3-5) snapped a five-game losing streak with a pair of road wins over divisional rivals Ohio University and Akron. Friday was a thrilling 2-1 double-overtime victory over the archrival Bobcats, Jess Kodiak scoring in the final seconds of regulation to tie the score at 1-1. It was her seventh goal of the season. Then in the 107th minute, Katy Dolsesh sent the 'Hawks home a winner. Then on Sunday, the 'Hawks scored three second-half goals and Allison Norenberg was perfect in the net, giving Miami a 3-0 shutout against the Zips. Kayla Zakrzewski (her seventh goal), Emily Hyde (her second) and Dolesh (her sixth) all scored for the RedHawks. For her efforts over the weekend, Dolesh was named MAC Co-Offensive Player of the Week (along with Western Michigan's Brittany Pavlica).

The regular season is fast drawing to a close, but the RedHawks will finish with three home games. This weekend the 'Hawks will host Northern Illinois and Western Michigan as they make a push for the MAC Tournament.

Ice Hockey: F Reilly Smith was named the CCHA's Offensive Player of the Week following Miami's series split (a 4-3 win and a 3-2 loss) at Colgate this weekend. Smith tallied five points (4 goals, 1 assist) in the series, including the second hat trick of his career in Friday's win. This is the third time he's earned the award in his career.

Following the Colgate series, the RedHawks took an expected tumble in the national rankings. Miami fell from #5 to #10 in the USCHO.com Poll, receiving just 599 points (zero first-place votes). The fall wasn't quite as dramatic in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine Poll, where the 'Hawks slipped from #4 to #7, receiving 275 points (also no first-place votes). Boston College held on to the top spot in the USA Today Poll for the second consecutive week, but the USCHO.com Poll had another new #1, with Michigan taking the honor. The Wolverines and Eagles are flip-flopped in the two polls, with Denver sitting pretty at #3 in both. The Colgate Raiders enjoyed a boost following their series against Miami; they go from unranked to #14/#16. Other ranked CCHA foes include Notre Dame (#5/#6), Western Michigan (#11/#12), Lake Superior State (#19, USCHO) and the 'Hawks' next opponent: #14 (USCHO) Ferris State.

Field Hockey: The RedHawks (5-11, 3-4) lost their only game of the weekend 3-2 to Central Michigan. Jackie Nguyen and Emily Gruesser both scored in the opening ten minutes for Miami, but the 'Hawks couldn't hold on to the early lead. The RedHawks will play three home games this week, their final ones of the regular season. Tuesday brings Ohio State to Oxford, and then Miami will host MAC rivals Ohio and Kent State on Saturday and Sunday.

Cross Country: Both the men's and women's teams competed at the Penn State National Meet. The ladies took home a sixth-place finish, while the men finished in ninth. Dave Wing led the men, coming in 31st place (27:26), while Kelley Miller came in 26th (22:16) to lead the Miami ladies. Both teams will now have an extra week of preparation before the MAC Championships October 29th in Muncie, Indiana.

Also, belated honors were bestowed on the men's team for 2010 performances. Head coach Warren Mandrell's staff was named 2010 Ohio Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year, and Matt Marol was named 2010 Ohio Cross Country Freshman of the Year.

Track & Field: The women's team added Stacey Wannemacher to the staff as a throws coach. A 2011 graduate of Purdue, she had been serving as program's director of operations as a graduate student. As an undergraduate with the Boilermakers, she was a three-time All-American in shot put.

Volleyball: Miami (12-10, 3-5) suffered a pair of home losses to MAC rivals Eastern and Central Michigan. The RedHawks won only one set over the course of the weekend and are now riding a four-match losing streak. This weekend they will go on the road to face Ball State and Toledo.

Golf: Miami finished in 13th place in a 17-team field at the Firestone Invitational in Akron. Brett Tomfohrde was Miami's top finisher, shooting one-under par and 15th place. The 'Hawks next match is the Georgetown Intercollegiate October 17 & 18 in Beallsville, Maryland.

Basketball: The MAC announced a regional television package which will broadcast 39 men's and women's MAC basketball games on SportsTime Ohio (STO). Miami will be featured in four games, two apiece for the men's and women's teams: The men will be showcased Janurary14 against Buffalo and February 21 against Kent State, while the women will be on January 15 at Ohio and January 28 against Ball State.
