Around Campus: Business as usual for Simpson

Around Campus is a weekly feature keeping you current in RedHawks news.

Softball: For their standout performances in Miami's games the week before, Paige Myers and Allie Larrabee were named MAC East Division Players of the Week. It was the third time this season that the RedHawks have had both the Pitcher and Player of the Week. Myers pitched a complete game shutout against Toledo last Friday, leading the 'Hawks to an 8-0 win. Larrabee, the freshman firstbaseman, went 10-for-15 in the five games Miami played with five RBI, two runs scored and an OBP of .706. It was the first such award for both players.

In this week's action, the RedHawks (16-12, 2-3) were 2-2, splitting both their series on the road against Akron and Ohio University. Jessica Simpson pitched all four games for Miami, throwing a complete game in each. The 'Hawks played a doubleheader against the Zips Friday, winning the opener 4-0, before falling 3-0 in the second game.  Simpson struck out seven batters. in the first and five in the second. On Saturday, Simpson held the Bobcats in check for most of the time, but the game went into extra innings, where Miami fell 2-1 in eight frames. But on Sunday, Simpson was back in form, picking up her eighth shutout of the year in a 3-0 win. With the season hardly underway, she still has plenty of time to catch Kristy Burch's single-season record of 11 shutouts, set in 1990. This week, Miami will welcome IPFW (16-8-1) for a game on Wednesday before resuming MAC play with a two-game series against Ball State (22-13, 3-0) Saturday and Sunday.
