If you are an Arnie fan, then this is your week to be excited. If, however, you are a fan of good movies, well, this might be another week when you catch up on the new releases available on DVD that came out in 2012 instead of going to the theater. Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to the big screen in his first action picture where he is the star since he left the governor’s office. It is also the week for political intrigue and a horror movie where the trailers have, at the very least, been truly creepy.
Here are the new movies hitting theaters January 18, 2013:
The Last Stand - Arnold Schwarzenegger, Forest Whitaker, Luis Guzman. Arnold returns to the big screen and tries to pick up where he left off when he decided to enter the world of politics. However, in this movie the filmmakers at least try to acknowledge the fact that Arnold is much older. Schwarzenegger plays a small town sheriff who has become as such after years of being a narcotics agent with the LAPD. Then, suddenly, the most wanted drug cartel kingpin in the western hemisphere escapes from the FBI and goes on a spectacular chase, which will take him right through the very town that Arnie is now the sheriff. Lots of explosions, car chase sequences and action ensues. Rated R.
Broken City - Mark Wahlberg, Catherine Zeta Jones, Russell Crowe. Crow plays the mayor of New York who decides that he must hire ex-cop (Wahlberg) to follow his wife because he believes his wife is cheating on him. Before long, however, the ex-cop discovers that there is a lot more going on than just a jealous husband and possibly some extra-marital hanky panky. Before long, he is embroiled in a huge political scandal that could completely undo the mayor, and also puts him in great danger. Rated R.
Mama - Jessica Chastain, Nikolai Coster-Waldau, Megan Charpentier. A movie produced and distributed by horror and fantasy film director Guillermo Del Toro, this is a movie to keep you up at nights. Two young girls vanish into the woods and are found, years later, having turned almost into animals, having somehow survived on their own. Everyone is baffled as to how they managed to do it. When the two girls are taken home to their relatives, it turns out, however, that something has come back with them. Something supernatural, and very protective and potentially evil, has been taking care of these two children. Rated PG-13.
