Fish oil just may hold possible benefits when it comes to army suicides
We all know that omega 3 fatty acids do wonders for the heart but can they really help prevent suicide in soldiers? It has not yet been substantiated but the army is eager to find out.
General Peter Chiarelli, vice chief of staff for the army and for years has been diligently searching for way to decrease the number of suicides in the army.
The National Institutes of Health researchers compared routine blood samples taken during 2002 to 2008 of 800 service members who had committed suicide in later months. Another round of samples from 800 service members had also been taken.
The research had demonstrated that those service members with low levels of omega 3 fatty acids were at 62% risk for committing suicide.
Researchers make it clear that this study does not advocate omega 3’s to discourage suicides.
Beginning studies on omega 3 fatty acids does advocate that the supplements could alleviate symptoms of specific depression according to the Mayo Clinic. It has been noted by experts that the benefits of fish oil for mental health warrant confirmation in larger rigid studies.
Regardless of that fact, Capt. Joseph R. Hibbeln, M.D., Acting Chief and co-author of study, notes that the possible psychiatric benefits of omega 3 could be an instrument in reducing suicides.
General Chiarelli remarks he is trying to ensure that their doctors quickly get going on clinical trails so a determination can be made as if it is or is not a benefit.
Last year the rate of suicide in the army had reached 22 service members per 100,000,
Last year a study published in the June 15th online publication Journal of Clinical Psychology, was the largest study ever noted on evaluating omega 3 effectiveness in treating major depression.
They study had revealed omega 3 did improve depression symptoms in patients diagnosed with depression and not linked with anxiety.
You can obtain omega 3 in fish and seafood which is the best option.
