Army identifies two soldiers killed in combat in Afghanistan

This morning, the Department of Defense announced the death two soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

Capt. Andrew M. Pedersen-Keel, 28, of South Miami, Fla., was killed March 11, 2013, in the Jalrez District of Afghanistan, by small arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.

Killed in the same incident, also by small arms fire, was Army Staff Sgt. Rex L. Schad, 26, of Edmond, Okla. Staff Sgt. Schad was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Armor Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.

These are the first combat-related deaths in Afghanistan since Marine Staff Sgt. Jonathan Davis was killed in Helmand Province on Feb. 25, 2013.
