An Opening Reception for two exciting new exhibitions: The 2010-2011 Artists in Residence Exhibition and the Armory Annual Student Show is taking place this Friday, April 15, 2011, 6 – 8 p.m. at the Armory Art Center, 1700 Parker Avenue, West Palm Beach.
The Armory’s Artists in Residence included Suzanne Scherer and Pavel Ouporov, who as 2-D Artists in Residence brought something new to the Armory’s roster of classes with Egg Tempera & Gilding classes. The collaborative husband and wife team met while studying at the Moscow Surikov State Academy of Art Institute where Ouporov earned his MFA. Scherer received her MFA in Painting from Brooklyn College. Their works are in a number of permanent collections, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Fogg Art Museum, and the Library of Congress.
The other 2010 – 2011 Artists in Residence are Jonathan Read, Virginia Jenkins, Chandra DeBuse, and Jessica Stephens. Read, the sculpture Artist in Residence, received his MFA in Ceramics from Arizona State University in 2005. His national and international exhibitions include the Museum of Applied Art in Vienna, Austria and at Jingdezhen Sanbao Ceramic Art Institute in Jingdezhen, China.
Virginia Jenkins, one of a pair of ceramic Artists in Residence, has been the recipient of many awards. Chandra DeBuse, the second ceramic Artist in Residence received her MFA from the University of Florida in 2010. Jessica Stephens joined the Armory as the Jewelry Artist in Residence with strong credentials as an exhibiting professional jeweler.
According to Helen Otterson, Chair of the Ceramics Department, the Armory is delighted to have these artists call the Armory studios home for the past eight months. “They bring a fresh perspective to the studio which benefits the students… Even if students are not taking a class from one of the Residents, they often pick up new techniques and inspiration for their own artistic direction.”
Students’ work can be viewed in the Armory Annual Student Show, an exhibition of work in all media including painting, drawing, printmaking, fibers, glass, jewelry, sculpture and ceramics by talented adult artists who created in the Armory studios between January 1, 2010 and April 11, 2011. The Student Show runs until May 3, 2011, and the Artists in Residence Exhibition runs until May 13.
