Seven hundred thousand tons of Cognac consumed by Armenia. Though, it's outpaced by their vodka consumption.
I've been to Armenia, back in the days when the Soviets ruled things. My recollection of Georgia and Armenia was that they had lots of their own, locally-grown grapes and they converted them into medium quality wine and brandy.
As the article notes:
The issue is that 13% of vodka is imported to Armenia, meanwhile 90% of the wine and brandy is produced in the country. Consequently, the consumption of wine and brandy benefits the domestic economy wile the consumption of vodka, profits the economies of other countries.
None of it was what I'd call high quality, but, it was good food drinking alcohol.
I may have to see if I can get some of that stuff now. See if it has improved at all.
The official Cognac "police" in France have asked me to put the following statement in my article:
Armenian peoples produce Brandies but not “Cognac.” “Cognac” is a geographical indication that can only be produced in the Cognac area in France, under strict rules of production.”
