The City of Arlington Parks & Recreation Department was a big winner at the 2012 Texas Recreation and Parks Society (TRAPS) Institute and Expo. TRAPS is a non-profit organization “committed to advancing the field of parks, recreation and leisure services in Texas, while advocating for enhanced recreation opportunities.”
The organization awarded Arlington the Texas Gold Medal Award for its “great parks” and “exceptional programs.” Criteria for the award are financial oversight, leadership, master plan and execution of that plan, and media and marketing, each of which Arlington is expert at.
The city also won the Lone Star Recreation Programming Achievement Award for the Mom & Son Lock-In held at the Cliff Nelson Recreation Center. This is an annual event giving moms and their boys the chance to hang out together and play.
If you live in Arlington or have visited any of the parks and recreation centers, you won’t be surprised at this recognition; you’ve already hung out in some of the amazing parks and taken part in classes, programs, or used the gym facilities offered at the rec centers located throughout the city.
If you haven’t visited any of the parks or rec centers, do yourself a favor and do it! There’s a park or activity for every person and every interest, and you’ll be glad you did.
While the awards recognize and honor past achievement, the Arlington Parks Department isn’t resting on its laurels: it has a huge slate of activities, improvements, and even new development in store for the future! Upcoming projects include the skate park at Vandergriff Park, repairs at Bob Duncan Center, and the development of the High Oak Terrace Site.
