While gamers still hang on every tiny morsel of information from Valve and its founder, Gabe Newell, "Half-Life" fans were treated to a set of leaked images Friday from a canceled fourth expansion to the popular 2004 sequel.
"Half-Life 2: Episode 4," otherwise known as "Return to Ravenholm" was being developed by Arkane Studios in 2007. The French developer was hard at work on the would-be big seller when it was canceled for unknown reasons. Judging by its title, and the leaked images, it would have returned players to the spooky and atmospheric Ravenholm area, first seen in the original "Half-Life 2."
The studio has never commented on why the project was canceled. But seeing as Valve has yet to even acknowledge the existence of "Half-Life 2: Episode 3" or a subsequent "Half-Life 3," it's not hard to imagine Valve simply wanted to go in a different direction. Arkane Studios wasn't hurt too much, as they ultimately went on to release "Dishonored," one of last year's best-received titles.
