The weekend of February 10th and 11th 2012 is going to be one of the biggest celebrations in Arizona history. The Grand Canyon State is celebrating its 100th year of Statehood. Washington Street in downtown Phoenix is the center of action for the “Arizona Best Fest” Experience.
There will be an American Indian Village, a Hispanic Village, and a Natural Resource Pavilion. Arizona Storytellers will weave their tales near the History Pavilion. Visit the Western Town, Military Pavilion, and even a Family Fun Zone and Carnival.
Stop by and see the historic State Capital or take a two block jaunt down to the old pioneer cemetery at the Pioneer & Military Memorial Park. Washington and Jefferson Streets will be lined with food courts, arts, and wine and beer gardens. Fireworks will top off each day’s events.
Musical groups like Jerry Riopelle, the Gin Blossoms, and George Benson will be there to perform plus many more local Arizona entertainers.
Let’s just say there is a little bit of something for everyone. The journalist side of this writer sees a great opportunity to record this great event in a story for future generations —face it—we will only experience the Arizona Centennial once in our lives. The historian side sees a chance to revel and be at one of the greatest Arizona historic parties in this century. The preservationist side hopes guests will come and see the great care the volunteers down at the old cemetery do to keep our early pioneer’s final resting spot a beautiful place to be. And the ghost hunter side…well, let it be reminded that beneath the streets of Phoenix---Washington and Jefferson—is a whole other world. Early Hohokam settlers once lived and died where scores of people will be celebrating the growth of Arizona.
As you make your way up and down Washington and Jefferson Street this weekend, you just may run into someone that appears to be in costume. But take another look. It might be a ghost from the past who has returned to participate in the 100 Year Birthday Celebration. The Centennial Sentinel’s will be out there—waiting...watching...and enjoying the festivities, too.
