Arizona cop illegal immigrant resigns after undocumented alien status revealed

An Arizona cop illegal immigrant resigned after her undocumented alien status was revealed. The 42-year-old woman was reportedly unaware that her birthplace was Sinaloa, Mexico. Her family had told her that she was born in Texas, and she was in possession of a Texas birth certificate when she was hired by the state police force. Her driver's license and her high school diploma were both from California.

According to a Dec. 11, 2013 report by MSN.com, Carmen Figueroa was a criminal investigations detective until Monday when she stepped down from her position due to her status as an illegal immigrant. An Arizona cop must be a United States citizen. That requirement is posted right on the website of the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Under the minimum qualifications and selection criteria, "must be a citizen of the United States" is the very first item listed.

If Figueroa had not resigned, she would have been fired, Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves said. "She told us she was always under the impression through her mother that she was born in this country, and she did not really find out until this summer ... that she was an illegal alien through, I believe, a confrontation with her mother," Graves told The Associated Press.

The Arizona cop's illegal immigrant status was discovered when the State Department received a passport application submitted by her brother, who is in the United States military.

According to Graves,"It was pretty clear as it went up the chain (of command) that she would be terminated." She had been on administrative leave since Sep. 4, 2013, with pay. The Department of Public Safety was advised of the Arizona cop's illegal immigrant status back on Aug. 22, 2013.

Prior to being hired as an Arizona cop, the illegal immigrant worked as a secretary for the federal Bureau of prisons. She also previously worked as an officer and a secretary for the court system.
