Arizona centennial: celebrating 100 years of statehood

While most of the nation is celebrating Valentine's Day on February 14, Arizona will be having a birthday. This year is sure to be a memorable one as Arizona celebrates 100 years of statehood. There are many events and happenings throughout the valley to commemorate this exciting event.

Arizona Best Fest: On February 11 and 12 the State Capitol Mall will be partying with live perfomances including Arizona's own Gin Blossoms. There will be events just for kids like carnival rides, storytelling and they can learn to lasso like a real Arizona cowboy at the Shamrock Farms Family Fun Zone. For those who are allowed to stay up late, there will be fireworks Saturday night at 10pm.

Arizona Statehood Days: Pioneer Arizona Living History Museum will be a great place to visit on February 11. Your family can be educated about a historical village from the 1800's and see a Revolutionary War event.

Romancing Arizona: February 14 is the day to be at the Musical Instrument Museum to celebrate Valentine's Day and 100 years of Arizona statehood. There will be live entertainment from The Sugar Thieves and Savoy Hop Cats. Get a babysitter because this is a 21 and over event.

Parada Del Sol: This annual parade will be in Scottsdale on February 11 and has been sanctioned by the Arizonal Centennial Commission as an “Official Centennial Event”. The Trails End Celebration is a great place to bring the little ones for entertainment, pony rides and a petting zoo.

Try to pick up a 100-page centennial issue of Arizona Highways magazine that featuring 100 years in pictures from the old west to the Great Depression to the nifty fifties to the present. Happy birthday Arizona, you are rich with history and sometimes controversy but you are alway interesting.
