Arizona boxer Joe Martell (2-5-1) will be fighting Richie Nieves (6-0-1, 3 KOs) next Thursday Jan. 31, at the Hilton Garden Inn, in Staten Island, New York. The card is being presented by Greg Cohen Promotions.
Martell says he received a call last Thursday for this fight, and in true Martell fashion accepted the offer. Never one to shy away for a chance to fight, Martell will fight anytime and anywhere.
At 35-years-old, Martell has entered the game late, fighting only ten bouts as an amateur. He admits he may never be a world champion, but he loves to fight.
For Martell, having the odds stacked against him is almost the norm for him. He has been counted out so many times, but he keeps coming back. Having heart and grit is what makes him a fighter to watch. Forget about his record, forget about his age, it's the journey of how he arrived to this point that makes you want to root for Joe.
Martell has made great improvements in his power and speed, knowing he was half-step behind and split second behind in speed, he dedicated himself and went to work.
Trained by George Garcia at the Hammer Boxing Gym in Phoenix, Martell has found a home at the gym. Garcia has taken Martell under his wing and told him strait up that it would not be easy, the two work well together and developed a good relationship. Garcia, a former California State Champion and is well respected in the Arizona boxing circle.
The two leave Tuesday for New York and not leaving much time to prepare, but that's normal for Joe. He trains everyday and stays fight ready, win or lose, one has to respect a fighter like Joe Martell.
