Arizona Bike Week begins with a rumble, with photos

Like all motorcycle rallies seem to do, Arizona Bike Week eased in with a rumble today, a rumble that should turn to a roar by Saturday night.

The gates opened at noon but the parking lots never started filling up until early evening. Then the bikes started rolling in in waves.

Activity in the big tent kicked off at 4 p.m. with the group Coverz, Inc. doing the kind of music their name implies. They touched a tender spot with a dedication of "Rest In Peace" to Kimmy Chapman, the popular and well-known founding editor of Biker Information Guide, who died Saturday when the bike she was a passenger on was hit by a driver turning left in front of them. A Bike Week memorial service is planned on Sunday.

Next up was the Miss Arizona Bike Week Pageant. Fourteen competitors came out to strut their stuff, and were back in swimsuits later. Judging has not been concluded at this writing.

The highlight for the evening will be a performance by Skid Row at 9 tonight.

Then Thursday will open with a Riding for Kids Charity Run. Hawg Wild will play in the Party Tent and Warrant is the headliner in the Handlebar Saloon tomorrow night.
