The 49-year-old neighbor of Ariel Castro has confessed to killing two women. On Oct. 19, the New York Daily News reported that Elias Acevedo Sr. was charged for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of his 30-year-old neighbor Pamela Pemberton and another woman, 18-year-old Christina Adkins. He has also been charged in the rape of two young girls. Since Acevedo confessed, the death penalty will not be sought in the case.
According to authorities, Castro's case caused these missing person's cases to be reopened. The two dead women went missing in the 90's and the mystery of their whereabouts has now been solved.
The Ariel Castro neighbor murder case is getting national attention today -- mainly because Acevedo committed terrible crimes and lived in the same block as Castro who did the same. Castro held three women captive as sex slaves in his basement for several years. Police say that they arrested Acevedo after they questioned him (and several other neighbors) about Castro. Police learned that Acevedo was a convicted sex offender who had failed to report his current address and the rest sort of rolled into investigators' hands.
"While incarcerated, Acevedo's DNA was linked to a 1993 rape that occurred near the location where Pemberton's body was found. The FBI then linked Acevedo to the 1995 disappearance of Adkins, last seen in the vicinity of Seymour Avenue," the New York Daily News reports.
The Ariel Castro neighbor murder case is shocking and disturbing. Acevedo, however, will likely spend the rest of his life behind bars and the families of Pemberton and Adkins can have some sort of closure now nearly 20 years later.
