Ariel Castro, the notorious kidnapper in Cleveland, was found dead in his jail cell. On September 3, CNN reported that Castro, 52, was found hanging in his cell and all efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful. His body was discovered at 9:20 p.m. and was pronounced dead roughly 90 minutes later. He was reportedly placed on suicide watch and separated from the general prison population. Guards were supposed to check on Castro every thirty minutes.
Castro plead guilty in August to 937 counts, including the kidnapping and imprisonment of three Cleveland women. He was sentenced to life in prison plus 1000 years. He would never be a free man again and apparently while he attempted to force that fate on three women, he could not handle the same for himself.
Castro's three victims were kidnapped between 2002 and 2004, all being held until a neighbor heard Amanda Berry crying out for help and called 911 in May. A plethora of evidence, including diaries kept by all three women helped to seal Castro's fate. One of the women even gave birth to a child who Castro fathered during her imprisonment.
Hopefully the death of Ariel Castro will serve as closure for his victims and their families. While they were imprisoned in his home for roughly ten years, he only lasted in the Ohio prison system for 33 days after his conviction. A small price to pay for the incredibly heinous crime that he committed.
