Ariel Castro was found dead in his prison cell, and officials state the Cleveland kidnapper hanged himself. USA Today reports on Sept. 4 that correction officials found his body in the cell, and medical staff could not revive him. Castro was serving a life sentence for kidnapping and torturing three women in his home.
Ohio Rehabilitation and Correction officers confirmed that the Cleveland kidnapper was dead. After his body was discovered hanging in his cell, he was transported to the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. Staff could not revive Ariel Castro, and he was pronounced dead.
Prison officials state that Castro was isolated in his own cell and did not interact with others. The 52-year-old was serving a life sentence at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient for holding three women in his home for over a decade. On Aug. 1, he was sentenced to life in prison and an additional 1,000 years.
Ariel Castro had been on suicide watch in May before he was sentenced, but prison officials removed him from the watch in June. Police found a suicide note in his home that included confessions of his crimes and victim blaming. He was moved to a different prison in August and continued to be isolated from other prisoners.
The Correctional Reception Center will still investigate the suicide, but early reports indicate Ariel Castro took advantage of a break between the usual routine checks by guards and hanged himself. There have been no official statements from Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus at this time.
