On Aug. 1, Castro plead out to life in prison plus 1,000 years for 937 counts that included murder and the rapes, and kidnappings of Michelle Knight, Amanda Berry, and Gina DeJesus. He agreed to this plea deal only if the death penalty was taken off the table. While many are certain that his victims will sleep easier at night knowing that he is dead, it still seems a bit strange that he would commit suicide after pleading to stay off death row. The Ohio department of Corrections is launching an investigation into his death as timing seems strange.
Castro was in protective custody and not allowed other inmates for his own protection. Guards claim that they swept through each cell block every half hour, therefore, Castro most likely would have had to carefully plan his death, or he was helped. Prison medical staff attempted life saving measures, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center.
An investigation into the death of Ariel Castro as well as the guards working that evening are underway. There is no official cause of death released at this time to state exactly how he died.
