Ariel Castro is dead. The convicted Cleveland kidnapper was found dead in his cell which was located in an isolated area of the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio. Castro had allegedly been housed apart from the other inmates for his own protection.
According to 19 Action News on Sept. 3, Ohio State Police and the Department of Corrections are investigating what happened to Castro who was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years.
This sentence was handed down on Aug. 1 after the 53-year-old was convicted of kidnapping Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight, and Gina DeJesus. He was also convicted of sexually abusing these three women after he took the trio as his captives for more than 10 years.
Reports coming in about the death of Ariel Castro contend that the convicted criminal apparently killed himself since he was found hanging in his cell at around 9:20 p.m., CT.
Ohio Corrections Department spokesperson JoEllen Smith told 19 Action News:
"Upon finding inmate Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures. Shortly after he was transported to OSUMC where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm."
