Friends of former Slits vocalist Ari Up are hosting a charity birthday party in her honor on January 16th in Brooklyn, New York. Hosted by "Punk Professor" Vivien Goldman, Dunla Best, Aram Sinnerich and Joly McFie, the event is open to the public as proceeds will benefit St. Juse's Children's Hospital. The show will take place 8pm at the Music Hall of Williamsburg; doors will open at 7pm.
Featured guests and performers include Neneh Cherry, Carter Van Pelt, True Warriors and former and current members of The Slits. There will also be some lyrical readings by Michael Patrick McDonald and Greg Tate,
Up and drummer Palmolive formed the Slits in 1976. Their place of influence in punk rock hostory is described as "incalculable" by Goldman in her Huffington Post column. The quartet's debut album, Cut, charted at #30 in the UK and is listed amongĀ The Observer's top British albums of all-time. After their 1981 breakup, she took part in a number of music projects until releasing her first full-length solo album in 2005. She then re-formed The Slits and led the group until succumbing to cancer in October of 2010.
