In 1979, several Americans were taken hostage after the American embassy in Iran came under attack. When the CIA is ordered to rescue them, Tony Mendez (Affleck) comes up with a plan unlike any other. He teams up with the Canadian ambassador, Ken Taylor (Victor Garber), to lay out ideas for a fake movie that will be filmed in Iran. The plan is to make it look like the hostages are part of the film crew making a sci-fi movie called “Argo.” With the help of makeup artist John Chambers (John Goodman) and producer Lester Siegel (Alan Arkin), the crew is able to make the Iranians believe this movie is actually being made.
Nominated for Best Picture at this year’s Academy Awards, “Argo” is a tense thriller that also has a great sense of humor. Be sure to catch it before the Oscars are handed out.
The Pageant Theatre is located at 351 East 6th Street in Chico.
