Not far from Modesto’s landmark “Water Wealth Contentment Health” sign is group of people passionately dedicated to making a home for the Argentine Tango. And their efforts just might lead to greater contentment and health for Modestans.
Argentine Tango of Modesto is a non-profit association of tango aficionados dedicated to sharing the artistic, cultural and social aspects of Argentine Tango in Stanislaus County.
“It is different from ballroom dancing and improvisational,” says tango teacher Mary Menz. “There is no set of steps. The focus is not on steps but on partner connection.”
When non-dancers think of tango, they may picture flashy moves done to impress the audience, but dancers know a true partnership always yields the most inspired performance of all. Week after week, the students in Menz’ beginner’s class find contentment by refining their dance skills and welcoming new students.
But the benefits don’t end at contentment. Since moves can vary from gentle to rigorous, tango can be good exercise for all ages. And tango may also have some health benefits. One study featured in the Dec. 2007 issue of the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy found improved balance among a group of Parkinson’s disease patients who participated in tango. The tango students showed more improvement in balance than another group of patients who performed various chair exercises.
The possible health benefits have led researchers in recent years to conclude that tango deserves more study.
Beginning Tango classes are held every Saturday at 11 a.m. Sophia’s Dance Journey, 711 10th Street, in Modesto. The beginner’s class is followed by a practica at 12 p.m. A practica is an opportunity to practice tango skills as well as socialize.
There is also a practica every Monday night from 7 to 9 p.m. at Jacob’s restaurant, 2501 McHenry Ave. There is no minimum or cover charge for the Monday practica, though Jacob’s is a full-service restaurant where everything from drinks to a complete dinner can be ordered.
