Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys lost to Universidad de Chile 2-1 on Tuesday in a group game of the CONMEBOL Copa de Libertadores.
ESPN Deportes reported that all the goals were scored in the first half of the game. La U, nickname for the Chilean club team, scored the first two goals, putting the home team, Newell’s, in a very tough spot.
The first goal was scored in the first three minutes of the game by midfielder Guillermo Marino. The second goal was made with a penalty in the 16th minute of the game. The penalty was kicked into the net by Charles Aranguiz.
Right before the half, last year’s leading scorer for Newell’s, Ignacio Scocco, got one back for the home team. The rest of the game was scoreless.
There were two red cards issued in the second half, one for each team. Newell’s defender Gabriel Heinze got the red in the 70th minute. Jose Rojas from La U got his in the 76th minute.
Newell’s Old Boys are now in last place of group seven, and the Universidad de Chile is in first. The top two teams from each group, eight in total, advanced to the knock-out rounds.
