According to www.albertaworldcup.com, Mark Arendz of Hartsville, Prince Edward Island won a gold medal on Tuesday in the men's 15km standing biathlon competition at an International Paralympic Committee World Cup event at Canmore (an hour west of Calgary).

Arendz won the silver medal initially but was upgraded to gold when Russian biathlete Vladislav Lekomtcev was disqualified for having his coach on the range providing him instructions.

Arendz told Cross Country Skiing Canada's media relations director Chris Dornan afterwards that providing instructions on the range is "a big no no in our sport".

Aleksandr Pronkov of Russia won silver and Nils-Erik Ulset of Norway won bronze.

Russians swept the podium in three events Tuesday. In the women's 12.5 km sit ski competition, Svetlana Konovalova won gold, followed by Nadezda Andreeva and Akzhana Abdikarimova. In the women's 12.5 km competition for the visually impaired, Mikhalina Lysova won gold, followed by Iuliia Budaleeva and Elena Remizova. In the men's 15 km competition for the visually impaired, Nikolay Polukhin won gold, followed by Vladimir Udaltcov and Alekei Toropov.

Japanese biathletes prevented Russian sweeps in the other two events. In the women's 12.5 km standing competition, Momoko Dekijima of Japan won bronze, with Alena Kaufman of Russia winning gold and Natalia Bratiuk of Russia winning silver. In the men's 15 km sit ski competition, Kozo Kubo of Japan won silver with Roman Petushkov of Russia winning gold and Alexey Bychenok of Russia winning bronze.

The competitions were significant because they were preparation for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.
