Arendz medals in IPC World Cup biathlon event in Canmore

According to, Mark Arendz of Hartsville, Prince Edward Island won a silver medal on Sunday in Canmore (an hour west of Calgary) at an International Paralympic Committee World Cup men's biathlon 12.5 km standing event.

Arendz posted a time of 35:27.0. Aleksandr Iaremchuk of Russia won the gold medal and Azat Karachurin of Russia won the bronze medal.

Russians continued to dominate the medals, winning 15 of a possible 18 on Sunday, including three podium sweeps.

In the men's 12.5 km biathlon event for the visually impaired, Nikolay Polukhin won gold, followed by Stanislav Chokhlaev winning silver and Oleg Ponomarev winning bronze. In the women's 10 km biathlon event for the visually impaired, Elena Remizova won gold, followed by Iluiia Budaleeva winning silver and Elvira Kalabina winning bronze. In the women's 10 km sit ski biathlon event, Marta Zaynullina won gold, followed by Nadezda Andreeva winning silver and Natalia Kocherova winning bronze.

In the men's 12.5 sit ski biathlon event, Roman Petushkov of Russia won gold, followed by Kozo Kubo of Japan in second and Grigory Murygin of Russia in third.

Finally in the women's 10km standing biathlon event, Natalia Bratiuk of Russia won gold, followed by Alena Kaufman of Russia in second and Momoko Dekijima of Japan in third.

The biathlon competitions were meaningful because they were used as major preparation for the biathletes for the 2014 Paralympic Winter Games in Sochi.
