Fredericksburg area math teachers and students had a bit of fun on Thursday celebrating the mathematical constant, pi. The constant number known as pi is measured at just over 3.141, with most people stopping at 3.14. Since March 14 is written as 3/14, then celebrants can honor pi.
Riverbend High School students had the opportunity to buy a pie to celebrate Pi Day. Several math teachers wore Pi Day tee-shirts and students who selected “pieces of pi” were given mini pies as a reward. Some of the students tried to out-do one another in answering correct math questions.
Using dates and mnemonic devices really help in students’ recall and connections with math, science, literature, and other content areas. “Pi Day is fun and I look forward to eating my piece (of pie) in my classroom since I usually can’t have food”, said one Riverbend student. “And I’ll always remember the number that coordinates with pi, 3.14.”
