People get so focused on their cellphones you new pain in the neck could be from texting too much. The Term was coined by a chiropractor in Florida from postural pain from holding the neck and upper back in an abnormal position for a long time, too much texting is an overuse syndrome resulting from excessive strain on the spine.
Chris Cornett M.D. orthopedic surgeon and spine specialist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, “It’s identified as overuse syndrome involving head, neck and shoulders resulting in strain on the spine from looking in a downward position at hand held devices like cell phones, e-readers, mp3 players and computer tablets.”
“When you hold your body in an abnormal position, it can increase stress on the muscles, fatigue, muscle spasms and even headaches. With every movement you make to the front and sides with your head it increases the weight of your head on your neck resulting in “text neck.”
Increased injury to the dics and joint
As the injury continues to expand the experience of discomfort and injuries increase from “text neck.”
To alleviate stress from “text neck”:
- Modify the position of the device in your lap or causing you to lean your head down, find a way to hold the device as a neutral, eye level.
- Take breaks, be aware as you’re using technology devices throughout your day and take a break and change or alter your position.
- Physical fitness, having a strong flexible back and neck will help you deal with abnormal stresses and reduce musculoskeletal issues.
