School is starting back up. All around you, kids are going back to school after the holidays, and virtual students can hear their own clocks ticking down. As virtual students, they don’t even have the hope of an extra day or two off for snow: once January 6 arrives, it will be time for them to get back to work whether they’re ready or not.
So…are you ready?
Before school starts back on Monday, you should go through your materials and make sure that you have everything that you need. Better that you make a leisurely weekend trip to pick up some missing materials—whether that’s notebook paper, construction paper, crayons, or the pieces of an upcoming science experiment—than that you have to make a mad-dash run out on Monday.
Go through the house and pick up all of the pieces that have been scattered over the holidays. Make sure that all of the textbooks are back where they belong, the K12 materials are back in their usual location, and your art supplies are replenished and easy to find. Get everything reorganized and back together before your first day back so that you’ll be ready to jump right in!
Take a minute now to look over what your children will be doing over the course of the next semester. Get it planned out so that there won’t be any surprises when you get closer to the end of the year. You don’t want to end up with too little progress at the end of the school year!
Once you’ve done that, make a plan for what your children are expected to do for the next couple of weeks, and discuss it with them ahead of time. Maybe you want to do something fun to kick off the new year, or maybe you just want to get back to your regular routine as quickly as possible. Whatever the case, make sure that you know what you’re going to be doing ahead of time so it doesn’t come as a shock to any of you!
Ready? Take a deep breath…then dive back in!
