“Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” – Matthew 6:10b
God gets a bad rap. I hear some of you already saying “Whoa! What a way to open a morning message, Brother Matt!” Hey, it got your attention :-). More importantly, does God have your attention this morning? Good morning, family!
Many of you know this scripture as part of the Lord’s Prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13. The Lord has been impressing upon me to focus on this particular verse, because many of us (me included) tend to recite this powerful and Holy prayer without digging deeper for its meaning. Well, we are going to at least scratch the surface, church! So grab your coffee and let’s begin!
Allow me to start with a hypothetical story: Let’s supposed that I give my son five dollars and send him down the street to the store to pick up a gallon of milk. Along the way, my child deviates from my intention; and instead, takes a detour, meeting up with some neighborhood kids. They are gambling, and he decides to put the five dollars in the game and partake in this activity. All of a sudden, the police drive by, see what these boys are doing, arrest them, and haul them down to jail. Let’s then say my son declares in the squad car “well, I guess this is my father’s will that I get arrested and am getting hauled off to jail.”
What would you think of my son’s statement? I hope you would think that it is absolute nonsense! Sheer ridiculousness! This certainly was not my will, which is my intent. My intent was for my son to go get a gallon of milk. I gave him the directions, and the resources he needed to fulfill my intent; but he chose to go awry. His violating my will, in no way changes my intent. However, since my boy has free will, which I cannot violate, he has the power to submit, line up, and to come in agreement with my will; thus bringing my intent to pass—or to not bring my intent to pass. Either way, it does not change my intent.
As absurd as what my son’s rationale and response was in this make-believe scenario, is as unreasonable as the rationalization of many people’s response to their real life situations; as they want to blame God! I cringe when I hear people living in lack say “well, I guess it’s God’s will that I be poor,” or when someone is battling a sickness or disability and falsely concludes “it must be God’s will that I be sick/disabled,” or God forbid, a couple looses a child and surmises “well, I guess God needed a flower in heaven.” Hear me well, my brothers and sisters: These are lies from the pit of hell! Sickness, disease, death, lack, barrenness, discord, pain, and sorrow are not part of God’s Will!
It is important to note that not every affliction comes about because someone has done something wrong. Job is a prime example of this. God can allow one to be tested by the devil. I have experienced this, as have many of you. However, many ungodly things that beset us happen because we have violated or are not lining up with God’s Will; and even through this, it usually is not a punishment from God, but rather the consequences of rebellion—whether intentional or unintentional.
Jeremiah 29:11 testifies from the Throne room of the Most High God: “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” This is God’s Will, His Thelema (pr. Thel-ay-mah), which is “a determination, inclination, desire” (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance). Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines “determination” as “the act of deciding definitely and firmly; a firm or fixed intention to achieve a desired end.” God has a desired end for all of His creation; but because we have free will, we either submit to God’s Will for us and our lives; thereby aligning and agreeing with God’s intention for us and bringing it to pass; or we abort God’s plan for us. By aborting God’s identity, plan, and purpose for us, in no way changes God’s intent; but it will cancel out the manifestation of the Father’s Will concerning us.
Notice that the Scripture declares God’s Will be done “on earth as it is in Heaven.” God’s Will has already been established in heaven; however, it is our responsibility to establish God’s Will for us on earth. We are to pull down God’s Will from heaven and cause it to manifest on the earth! That is what Jesus was imparting when he brought forth the revelation that “Truly I [Jesus] tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven” (Matthew 18:18).
There are certain events that God’s Will most assuredly has and will come to pass regardless of our cooperation or lack thereof: the birth, death, and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior; the Second Coming and ultimate establishment of God’s Kingdom on earth; Judgment Day, where the lost will be cast into eternal torment and be forever separated from the Father; and Satan will be permanently stopped from ever harming God’s children again, and the Father’s sons and daughters will live with Him forever.
Stillborn babies, children abused or born with deformities is neither God’s Will nor the child’s fault. Again, this is the result of the devil, who has been able to come in to “steal, kill, and destroy” (John 10:10). Nor does it mean that the parents necessarily did anything wrong. This, I must save for another day, as I am already out of space for this message.
I leave you with this: God loves you so very much, and it is not your Father’s Will that you be anything less than who He called you to be; or live any other way than by walking in His best. God is the Great Healer and Restorer.
Do you want to start living in the overflow of every provision that God has for you? Then begin by reading, in His Holy Word—the Bible, what your Father has spoken over you and your life. And then believe, receive, submit, decree, declare, and come into alignment and agreement with your Creator’s declaration as it is in Heaven.
Father, thank You that Your plan and purpose for us is not to harm us, but to prosper us. Help us to submit our will to Your Will, and to come into alignment and agreement with what You have already spoken concerning us. Right now, in the Mighty Name of Jesus, we rebuke every lie that the enemy ever spoke into our lives. We bind, cast out, and nullify every single lie with the Blood of Jesus. And we decommission every foul-mouthed lying demon from assignment concerning us! In Jesus Name, we thank You that we walk in Your perfect Will for us and for our lives. Amen and Amen!
Take action! Challenge your thinking! Choose to submit your will to the Father’s Will. Choose to lay down your life and pick up His life that He created for you, that He died to give you. Choose to submit your ways and every area over to Him. Choose to reject, rebuke, and cast down the lies that the devil is speaking to you. And continue to fight the good fight of confessing your Father’s Word over you and your life every single day; for God, your Beginning and your End, has already given you the victory!
If you have never received Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior, I encourage you to do it today, right now, by saying this prayer out loud: “Jesus, forgive me for my sins. I am sorry. I truly desire to be saved and reconciled back to God, my Father, through You. I receive Your sinless Blood as payment in full for my sins—past, present, and future. I now call You my Lord and Savior, and invite You to live within my heart, and to permanently live within me. I make You Lord over me and over my life from this moment on. Amen.” Congratulations! You are now a child of God, made whole and made new, by the Blood of Jesus Christ!
