Type 2 diabetes is a disease in which people have a problem converting food into energy. In this process, too little insulin is produced from the pancreas to help keep blood sugar levels low.

There are many risk factors for developing type 2 diabetes.

Genetics play a big role in determining if someone has the risk of developing diabetes. You may want to get checked by your doctor to see if you are pre-diabetic if your parents or siblings have diabetes.

There are certain racial groups that have a higher risk for developing diabetes. The groups at a higher risk for developing diabetes include Alaska Native, American Indian, African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, or Pacific Islander.

If a woman has experience gestational diabetes (diabetes while pregnant) or gave birth to a baby weighing over 9 pounds, then they have a higher risk for developing diabetes in the future.

Having other complications such as high blood pressure or abnormal cholesterol levels can raise your risk for developing diabetes. Another complication only in woman called polycystic ovary syndrome can also raise risk for developing the disease.

As people age, they become more likely to develop diabetes.  If you are over 45 years old, you should have a glucose test done every three years.

People that are inactive or exercise less than 3 times a week are at risk for developing diabetes as well.

To lower your risk for diabetes, take the necessary steps to have a healthier lifestyle. Maintain a reasonable weight with healthy food and exercising daily. This can keep your blood glucose numbers down. If you have other complications like hypertension, keep treating it with the medication from your doctor or a diet.

If you think you are at risk for developing diabetes, please speak with your doctor about testing and treatment.
