Some people think coaching is so glamorous. They think, oh I’ll hire a coach and count to three and all of my problems will be solved! Not so fast… Before you hire a coach, you really need to consider the following:
- How committed are you?
o To ensure your coaching sessions are effective, you will need to commit your time, resources and investment to yourself. Are you ready to do that? What is the level of pain you’d feel if you don’t do this and take action?
o If you can carve out the time and space to focus exclusively on you, then you’ve taken the first step in the committed relationship. This step will begin your journey to attaining your goals! Excellent!
- Who will be your coach?
o Coaching has become very popular, so how do you choose the right coach for you?
o First, if professionalism, education and confidentiality are important to you, you’ll want to choose a coach trained and accredited through the International Coach Federation. Why? They have the highest level of code of ethics, see here: www.coachfederation.org/ethics
o Next, you should try before you decide. Most professional coaches offer complimentary or exploratory sessions. This is most important because not every coach can coach everyone. As with any relationship, there has to be that connection between both parties.
- When and where do you want to meet?
o Is a local coach important to you? Do you want to meet in person or is Skype or over the phone acceptable to you?
o What time of day/night are you looking to schedule your sessions? When is your favorite coach available?
- What are your expectations? Does your coach agree with them?
o The only way to decide is by asking your coach. Have that conversation with him/her for no other reason; you must be on the same page.
o Most coaches will make sure you’re on the same page, but here you are, taking control of your future/life… you don’t want to let anything be left for chance.
