Are you in a career transition? Here are 9 paths for you to explore

Many of us have been trained to believe we only have “one” career choice. This may have been true decades ago, but it isn’t true any longer. As human beings we naturally grow, change, and evolve.  This means that  as we change, so do our desires, goals, dreams and aspirations. A career you began at age 20, may not suit you at age 40. So at some point in our lives, many of us are finding ourselves in a career transition.

A sign that it might be time for you to change careers is if you are feeling unfulfilled, restless or unhappy in your current job. Maybe you haven’t acted on those feelings because you aren’t sure which direction to go in. If this sounds like you, here is an exercise that might help.

We’ve all heard that cats have 9 lives. Perhaps this is why cats are so laid back and calm. They know when their current life ends, they’re coming back again. For a moment, let’s pretend that you have 9 lives to live.

I want you to take out a piece of paper and write down 9 careers that you would choose for each life. Don’t worry about money or paying the bills or what your mother/father, brother/sister, spouse, or friends would say about it. Just let your imagination run wild.

  • Do you love food?  Would you love to be a Pastry Chef or a Chocolatier?
  • Maybe you love animals and dream of owning a Doggie Daycare Center,
  • Are horses our passion?  How about being a Horse Trainer?
  • Perhaps you’re the creative type and would love to be a Stained Glass Artist or a Sword Maker.

Let your mind be free to dream – for it is in your imagination and in that freedom where the clues are to your next career.

Finding your next career often takes time; you can't rush the process.  It is also important to find something you are passionate about.  Janet and Chris Attwood have developed a simple online test called the Passion Test.  Once you answer the 7 questions, you'll receive a detailed analysis allowing you to see where you stand in living a passionate life and what you can do to create a more fulfilling life.
