Are there really green jobs?

With new job losses up 22,000 this week, are there really green jobs available. President Obama has said many new green jobs will be created, but a trip to the White House website shows only jobs funded, not created.

This may not be so true in New Mexico, especially in Northern New Mexico in the Village of Questa. Chevron will build a solar power plant in Questa by installing 175 solar panels over 20 acres with construction to begin in the Spring of this year.

While it's not known how many green jobs this will bring to Northern New Mexico, let's hope that the local electric company, Kit Carson, will not hire outside of its community employment network.

Installing solar panels seems to be a "trainable" job and Taos County's unemployment rate is at an all time high at slightly over 10%. Instilling the trust of the Enchanted Circle unemployed is definitely one that should be explored.

Sunil Sharan in a story for the Washington Post today says "green jobs are a myth." Why? The cost for one reason and the willingness of the government to fund green jobs. Sharan goes on to say that green jobs fall into four categories: Manufacturing, Installation, Research and Development, and IT jobs and doubts there is a strong enough trained job force to get the job done.

Are there really green jobs? For now, there is hope in Northern New Mexico. Here's to hoping the jobs stay local.
