Are the two biggest bands of the nineties touring in 2014?

The nineties were a time of fusion. Many musical genres blended in what it is now considered to be popular music- an amalgamation of rhythmic, disco, rap and folkloric styles. But pop was the queen of the land. Most big names were more pop than anything else- Madonna, Janet, Mariah, Michael, Elton and George, to name a few.

Whatever the definition of pop, bands began to rule the charts, take over more marketing than ever before, and shatter records across the world.

The usual suspects which managed to do this again and again from the mid-nineties forward were pop bands. Despite the industry being saturated with boy bands, the girls also took their space in the music world. Girl power erupted and thus began the world domination of two of the biggest names in music:

Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys.

The two bands began roughly around the same time, albeit to different levels of success in different regions of the world. Despite being an American band, the Boys began building their repertoire in Europe, mainly Germany, and released two albums internationally before bringing their first LP to the US.

The girls are from the UK and although they came together through the vision of a managing duo, they fled without a contract and after hiring Simon Fuller (American Idol) as their manager took over the world, with platform shoes and peace signs, of course.

Turn twenty years down the line and the two bands are the best-selling girl and boy band respectively.

Although Spice Girls have not created new musical content together since their 2007/2008 tour and greatest hits release, they performed at the 2012 Olympics and created a West-end musical titled Viva Forever, with Judy Kramer of Mama Mia! fame and AB FAB comedienne Jennifer Saunders.

Backstreet Boys became a five-piece again after member Kevin Richardson’s departure in 2005. The boys released their eighth studio album and are touring the world.

In the nineties, the bands merged paths along the way but did not ever create content together. So why do it now? Although a few months apart of their anniversaries, both bands are essentially the same age: 20 years old!

BSB’s last tour was in unison with another big American boy band, New Kids on The Block. The tour did very well spawning a top 10 album. Now, BSB is touring the UK with newly-reunited girl band, All Saints. The Saints were the second biggest girl band from the UK after the Spice Girls in the nineties.

What are the facts behind these alleged plans? A few months ago, Melanie Brown and Emma Bunton (Scary and Baby Spice, respectively) tweeted each other about not having worked with BSB. Despite recent comments from Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) saying she is unlikely interested in being in the band, Melanie has been vocal about making a point to celebrate the twentieth anniversary. She told [[Katie Couric]] and other media outlets that she is always the first one to be on board for a reunion.

Have these rumors being verified?

Whilst promoting their new album, In A World Like This, in Spain Brian Littrell admitted that the two bands are seriously discussing a co-headlining tour. [[Watch the video here]]

If this comes to fruition, would you attend? Would you mind if the Spice Girls are once more a four-piece? What do you think of the two bands coming together?
