Rumor has it that the Duke and Duchess of York, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, have been keeping rather close company lately. The couple, who divorced in 1996, have been reported to be so close that it looks like they might remarry, according to The Telegraph on Aug. 24.
Friends and insiders have made several comments leading up to the current speculation.
“Mark my words, they will remarry,” said one friend. “It is only a matter of time.”
“It wouldn’t surprise me at all,” said another friend. “They are a wonderful couple together and, better still, pretty amazing parents.”
If they are so close, why did they divorce? Some may be too young to remember the scandal in 1992 when the British tabloids photographed “Fergie” having her toes sucked by then “financial adviser” John Bryan. One thing led to another and the couple divorced, whether by choice or palace edict. The Duchess told her side of the story in 1999.
“There was no reason for Andrew and I to get divorced; there wasn’t another person in our lives to go to. We got divorced because I had to go out to work, and Andrew and I believed that it wasn’t right for me to be commercial while I was still in the Royal family.
"I had to provide for my children, but not do it on their own doorstep in this country, rubbing the Royal family’s noses in my commerciality.”
Now both 53, Prince Andrew said he would not rule out remarrying his Duchess, but would not confirm it either.
“Do we have to be married?” he asked. “Well, let’s put it another way, I can neither confirm nor deny the possibility. We have two great children. We still look after them.”
Both Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson have been linked to a number of affairs over the years, but no long-term relationships. They have never criticized each other or divulged juicy secrets to the tabloids. They have just been friends.
So is there a royal remarriage in the future? There has been no official word from the palace, so only time will tell.
