It's a thought that disturbs most people but in North Korea, famine has struck so badly that citizens may be resorting to cannibalism to survive. According to The Atlantic Wire, reputable news sources have reported that incidents of cannibalism have actually occurred in the Communist country.
The Atlantic Wire shared reports from Asia Press, a news source that utilizes citizen journalists in the location, that some North Korean citizens have resorted to killing and eating their children to stave off starvation. One report stated that a man was arrested for digging up his grandchild's grave and eating the remains.
The Atlantic Wire report shared that this may not be the first time North Koreans have turned to eating each other to survive famine in that country. A 2003 report from The Telegraph (as referenced by The Atlantic Wire) stated that it was believed that during a food shortage in 2003 there were "farmers' markets" where human meat was sold.
The reports of cannibalism come on the heels of news that North Korea is conducting nuclear testing and plans to explode a nuclear bomb. News out of the Communist nation is historically difficult to verify and it is unknown how accurate information about the country is. Reports of parents murdering and eating their own children, if true, shows a true desperation and slip into a realm of inhumanity that is unthinkable.
