As the winds of change blow throughout Jets nation there is a tremendous amount of uncertainty surrounding the team. Will Mark Sanchez be the starting quarterback in 2013? Will the Jets trade Darrelle Revis? Can the team find a way to re-sign LaRon Landry? Will Gang Green franchise Dustin Keller or let him walk? The questions appear to be endless with this organization and that is never a good sign.
I think it is time for Jets fans to face a bit of reality with this organization. This team has several holes to fill with limited resources to do so. On offense Gang Green needs a quarterback, two guards, an explosive running back, a tight end, and a healthy Santonio Holmes. On defense the Jets need two linebackers, two safeties, and some type of resolution of the Revis contract situation. Add into the equation that the organization has limited salary cap space and it becomes apparently clear that the team is in trouble.
As free agency approaches Gang Green will have to use the "bargain shopper" approach hoping to find some "diamonds in the rough" in order to bolster their talent base. The Jets will not be able to splurge on any of the big names as their cap situation will prevent the team from doing so. In terms of the draft John Idzik and company have to bring in a very solid draft class. The front office must find guys that can contribute now and really cannot afford to pick too many project type of players. The Jets are going to have to maximize all of their resources in order to put a competitive team on the football field.
As a lifelong fan of Gang Green the current state of the team is frustrating and disappointing. It is beyond obvious that the Jets window of opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl has been closed. There is a good chance that it is going to take the team 2-3 years to regroup and contend for a championship. And that is assuming that Rex Ryan has the ability to right the ship and John Idzik brings in the personnel the team desperately needs.
So once again patience is the key Jets fans as there are no quick fixes for this mess. That is the sad reality for this team and it is time for all of us to face it.
